How To Make A Warping Board

When I started out, I thought direct warping was the exist all to end all. I was and so excited about getting my loom that I had it put together and was warping it THE Starting time Dark I got it home.

Information technology is important to mention that I had to get off from work at 6:00 p.m. Drive 45 minutes to get to the yarn shop that had ordered my loom for me. So information technology was LATE when I got my loom put together and was ready to warp.

Notwithstanding, the ease and direct forwardness of direct warping fabricated it doable at 11:00 in the nighttime.

All set up to warp my new loom! Piece of cake peasy!

If you would have told me and so that I would come to prefer preparing a warp on a warping lath and taking it to a loom, I wouldn't have believed you. Yet that is the case today.

Since getting my warping board and learning to employ it, I oasis't used the direct warping method. I actually regret non having gotten a warping board of some sort sooner!

Two Reasons I Think More than People Don't Use the Indirect Warping Method

Now, looking back I can see all of the time and frustration I would have saved If I had learned how to apply a warping board sooner! But I can totally understand why using 1 could be a little intimidating to some.

  1. Virtually Loom Articles Sell Warping Pegs With Their Loom – So this is how most of us larn by following the directions that came with our looms. Now, some looms really have started including warping boards in their pattern (Ashford Looms and Kromski Looms). And they do provide some information about winding a warp. But for most people, it is easier to stick with what y'all know and most of us know warping pegs and not warping boards.
  2. Warping Boards Are an Added Expense to an Already Hefty Buy – Let'south face up it weaving is a hobby that requires a sizable upfront investment. And so when we are putting extra heddles, shuttles, and other goodies into our cart, information technology is hard to meet the need for a warping board. Especially when they will add together an extra $50 to $100 plus to our order.

I get it. But my understanding didn't stop me from trying to find a way for more weavers to experience the joys of using a warping board! Later on a lot of thinking I came up with the thought below.

The DIY Role Supply Warping Lath

This warping board is fabricated from basic supplies that tin be found at your local office supply or large box store. When finished y'all volition be able to wind a warp that is up to 10 yards long.

Notation: How much warp you can put on your particular loom will depend on the manufacture and the type of yarn/ thickness of yarn that you are using. I have gotten over 7 yards of warp on my loom but I generally utilise sparse warp threads and am careful to put separation betwixt all the layers of my warp.

For best results, contact your loom manufacturer to see the maximum warp that will work with your loom. As you lot become more experience, y'all can peradventure push the limits. But starting out you probably desire to go on your warp under 5 yards long.

What Yous'll Need:

  • 6 pieces of 30″ x twenty″ foam core board (Readi Board)
  • Masking or Duct Record
  • Tacky or All Purpose Glue
  • 18 – half-dozen″ inch Long Wooden dowels (I plant these at my local Dollar Tree they are 1/4 inch in diameter)
  • Tape Measure out/ Measuring Tape/ or a Yard Stick
  • A Hammer
  • A Long Smash (It should exist slightly smaller in bore than the wooden dowels)
Some of the items pictured are actually used in the upgraded version of this warping board. In this tutorial, I'll merely be roofing how to make a basic warping board. But stay tuned for the other tutorial!

Step ane – Glue Together All of The Pieces of Foam Cadre Lath

  • I started out using some lath that had been used for some other project.
  • Ideally, you would want to glue all the layers and let it dry for several hours if not overnight.

Step two – Secure the Edges with Masking Tape

  • You lot could probably skip this step if you wait for the glue to dry. Since I didn't. I wrapped masking tape around all four sides of the warping boards base to keep it from shifting.

Step three – Mensurate and Mark Peg Placement

  • Brusk Sides – Starting nigh 1″ from the top and side. I made 7 (vii) marks 3 inches apart at the post-obit measurements (1″, iv″, 7″, 10″, thirteen″, 16″, 19″)
  • I did the same for the opposite side
  • Long Sides – Starting about 1″ from the peak, I came in to the 13″ measurement and made a mark there and at the 17″ mark.

Stride 4 – Making Holes with Hammer and Smash

  • You are now going to make the guide holes that y'all will push button your pegs into. It is important that the nail exist slightly smaller than the peg so that information technology will fit snugly.
  • First hammer the blast straight downwards and into the layers of foam cadre.
  • When yous hit your work surface, move the board over so that it is over the border of the table then that you tin hammer the boom all the way through.
  • Push the nail back out (the opposite mode information technology came in)
  • Keep making holes at all your marks.

Pace 5 – Adding the Glue to the Holes

  • Put a generous corporeality of glue at the pinnacle of each hole.
  • You don't need to put it all the way through or try to fill the hole just put a practiced amount at the top.

Step six – Hammer in the Wooden Dowels

  • Place the end of the dowel over the glue and hole.
  • Advisedly use the hammer to tap the peg into the foam core layers
  • Make sure that it goes down to all the layers but non out the back.
  • Continue all around.

Step seven – Let Dry out and And so Use!

  • Information technology is best to permit the mucilage dry before using. But if you lot followed the directions to a higher place. The pegs are in in that location and you could use it right away. Just it is better to let it dry.

Get Along and Warp!

Then there you have it! A super unproblematic DIY Warping Board. No ability tools needed.

You're Welcome 🙂

If you have any questions virtually the steps to a higher place please ask them in the comments below. I have put together a listing of some great resources for using a warping board.

Happy Weaving!
